41+ Major Box Office Flops That Lost Millions
From the cheerful cartoons of our younger years to the thrilling action films we enjoy on weekends, Hollywood keeps serving us incredible movies. But of course, in the very place where the biggest movie studios reside, not every film produced will be a massive hit. Indeed, some of them might be, quite frankly, not good at all.
Making a movie doesn’t come cheap. Producers always keep their fingers crossed, hoping their film will be the next blockbuster. But these films? They end up costing their studios money… we are talking about millions of bucks here.
Titan A.E – loss of $100 million
20th Century Fox is well-known for creating some of the most popular big-hit movies. This is why it came as a big shock to many critics when in 2000, Titan A.E., a movie produced by them, didn’t make a successful mark.
Even with famous actors like Drew Barrymore and Matt Damon in the movie, the animated journey was estimated to be one of the best-selling films of the year. Even though it had a production cost of $90 million and a big ad budget, it only made $37 million at the Box office and so far, the losses have exceeded $100 million.
The Adventures of Pluto Nash – loss of $96 million
“The Adventures of Pluto Nash was meant to be an entertaining mix of science fiction and comedy, with Eddie Murphy at the helm. He plays the character of an extraterrestrial who resides on the moon and gets swindled at a club. His journey to track down the thieves that pilfered his property outlines the adventure.”
The film features an awesome clash where he squares off with them near the movie’s close. Warner Bros Studios had huge hopes for this movie and poured in over $100 million into making it. But, to their disappointment, it didn’t hit big at the box-office and made only $7 million.
Jupiter Ascending – loss of $90-$110 million
Lilly and Lana Wachowski, the ones who made the famous sci-fi movie series The Matrix, really wanted to show that they could still make big-hit movies. They had a lot of pressure on them and people who review movies thought they should make another movie as good as their famous ones.
The movie, Jupiter Ascending, starred big names like Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum and had one of the highest CGI budgets of 2015. But despite the grand title, the film didn’t really flourish or climb high, instead, it made a big dent in the studio’s budget that ranges from $90 to $110 million.
Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas – loss of $125 million
Cartoons, particularly those that stick to proven storylines, are usually a big hit with families all over the globe who are seeking enjoyable content to share with their children. It’s hardly surprising then that DreamWorks had such great expectations for this movie.
While some folks enjoyed the film, the majority of reviewers and moviegoers rejected it. It even got to the point where many were squirming uncomfortably in their chairs, and there’s no doubt they shared the experience with their buddies. This film made DreamWorks suffer a loss of over $125 million. It’s quite unexpected that even a movie about Sinbad the sailor could tank that badly!
